Bigg Market
What can you say about the Bigg Market that hasn't already been said before. This bustling city area has put Newcastle on the map as being one of the top party cities of the world.

Although it can be quieter through the week, this area is where the young crowd flock to in their thousands every weekend.

With several bars and pubs in this small area you still get long queues forming outside some of them as most get packed out very quickly.

The majority of bars are drinking venues only, but there are numerous Indian and Italian restaurants close by that tend to fill up during the night.

City Vaults, at the top end of the Bigg Market is one of the most popular pubs in Newcastle with Live football and entertainment shown on match days.

At the heart of the Bigg Market one notable pub worth mentioning is Newcastle's oldest pub The Old George dating back to 1582. It is reputed that King Charles 1 was a regular visitor to the pub.

Also at the bottom end of the Bigg market just across the road you can find the impressive St Nicholas Cathedral, one of the oldest historic buildings of Newcastle.

The area is currently undergoing re-generation and it is expected that there should be some new bars and restaurants springing up over the next few years.

A subterranean wine bar named The Water Closet is now open located in what used to be the old gentleman's toilet, which dates back to 1898.

Balmbras which closed some time ago is due to re-open in 2024 following a major refurbishment to bring it back to it's former glory.
