One of the oldest pubs
in town which is full of character. The main
entrance still retains its original features and
inside there is an long narrow wooden bar with a
wooden floor.
The decor is a mixture of wooden and
mirrored wall panelling and the bar has a high
ornate ceiling. Opposite to the bar there is
portraits and pictures of sailing ships on the Tyne.
The front of the pub has beautiful stained glass
windows and there is also a small snug area with
seating. There is comfortable high backed leather
seating to the rear, which has several caricatures
adorning the walls. Regular music is on play at most
times with an old record player at the end of the
bar churning out music of yesteryear.
The bar is
very busy at the weekend but can be quieter through
the week when there is a more relaxed and cosy
atmosphere. It can be cramped at times due to the
narrow standing area next to the bar. It attracts a
steady group of regulars being popular with locals
and older clientele. A good starting place for a
night out on the Quayside. The pub is listed in the
AA pub guide.
Disabled access to front of
the pub is good but can be difficult getting to the
rear and the toilets due to the narrow bar. Toilets
are small and reasonable.
