Review:
A very large pub (part
of the Goose pub chain) that was previously known as
Scruffy Murphy's and The Filament and Firkin.
There are two wooden bars at either side and the
furnishings are of a very smart wooden mahogany
style. There is an abundance of seating throughout
with a mixture of high and low tables and chairs.
There is also plenty of standing room. Near the main
entrance there is a more comfortable seating area
with leather backed chairs.
The pub is bright and
airy as there are large
glass windows to the front and a high ceiling. The
decor is a mixture of orange, cream, blue and
maroon pastel colours and the floor is fully
carpeted. There is also smart drop down lighting
throughout. Around the walls there are several
bookcases.
There is regular music
playing at most times. Several widescreen TV's are to be
found in all areas with a large drop down screen
to the rear of the bar. Live sports are advertised
with live football a regular feature. There are
several games machines on show. Two pool tables are
located to the rear of the bar. There is
no smoking at the bars and there are a number of
designated no smoking areas. All major credit
cards are welcome.
The pub is one of the
largest in town and attracts a mixed clientele of
students, locals, business people, shoppers and
people on a night out. It owes this to its
excellent position being close to the shops and
bus station and it is also a good meeting place
prior to and after Newcastle home matches. A cash
machine is now located near to the toilets at the
rear of the pub.
Disabled access very
good with a disabled toilet to the rear. Toilets
are very smart and clean.
