Review:
Large Irish theme
pubthat is full of character.
The pub
was formerly known as 'The Vick and Comet' and was
featured in the film 'Get Carter'. There is a long
wooden bar and a wooden floor with new mahogany
fixtures throughout. The walls are adorned with all
sorts of Irish memorabilia and the decor is a
mixture of red, cream and green colours.
There is a
notice displayed from the pub management offering
you 'Cead Mile Failte' (One Hundred thousand
welcomes). The main bar area has comfortable leather
backed seating down one side with some leather settees. There are also several
wooden tables and chairs throughout the bar. To the
left of the main entrance is a small area
with additional seating that is used for diners.
Live music
is a regular feature every Friday, on a small
stage in the corner starting at 9.30pm. A quiz night is
advertised from 7.30pm on a Sunday. Live sports are
shown on 2 large drop down screens with all live
football and six nations rugby covered. Irish rugby and football matches are shown here. There is
also a large widescreen TV behind the bar. There are several games machines on
display throughout the bar.
The pub has a very laid
back atmosphere and is very popular with rail
commuters, locals, students and the younger crowd.
It can get very busy at the weekend and also on match days but is quieter
through the week. Cash back facility is available up
to £50. The bar has air conditioning with ceiling
fans used at certain times. An outside seating area is available when there is fine weather.
Disabled access to the
main bar is very good with the pub all on the one
level. The toilets are small and clean.
Price:
Moderate.
