Review:
Old traditional timber
framed Newcastle pub, part of the Wessex Taverns chain that has wooden beams on the
ceiling and a wooden floor. The decor is very old
fashioned however this does not detract from its
overall character. The pub is split into two
separate small bars to the front and rear. The bar
at the front has a raised area with tables and
chairs from which there is an excellent view of the
Tyne bridge and Quayside. It has a small bar that is
inlaid with old cabinets next to where there is
additional seating of high stools. At one end there
is a grandfather
clock with a fireplace at the other. Numerous old
antiquities are on display above the bar with old
Newcastle portraits adorning the walls.
The chandelier type
lighting by the bar gives a cosy and intimate feel
to the pub. The bar at the rear of the pub can be
accessed from the alley at the right hand side
that also leads to the rear of the Red House pub
next door. There is again a small bar in the rear
area with a low ceiling and a wooden floor. There
are a number of small wooden tables and chairs
with stools running the length of the bar. A
notable feature is an old range fireplace at to
the right hand side. Regular music is on play at
most times with a juke box located in the front
bar towards the side entrance. The pub is very
busy at the weekend but can be quieter through the
week. Is popular with the younger crowd at
weekends, students and especially vegetarian
diners. A taxi rank is located outside pub.
Disabled access is
very good with the bar all on one level. Toilets
to the rear of the pub are small and clean.
